Middletown RI, particularly the Purgatory area from Norman Bird Sanctuary to Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, is underlaid by unique rock formations.
300 million years ago the area was exposed to tectonic pressure, elongating stones in the conglomerate and creating striking joint fractures.
